Don’t know about you, but we are officially counting down…
We are BACK and raring to go. Ahead of another epic show, we are here to summarise and excite you with all that is returning better than ever to the Wilderness and throw back the curtains on some exciting, newly-formulated delights.
Let’s start with the basics. We have listened to your feedback, and we hear you. Our facilities will, this year, be better than ever. We return to pre-pandemic quantities of loos and showers across the whole site – all to be serviced by a dedicated team. We are thrilled to be welcoming pee-pioneers Peequal – a urinal for women who will be partnering with Daye period products. In other loo news, there’ll be dedicated banquet loos for each dining experience, so you can spend more time at the table. And finally, The Valley loos have been relocated to an easier-to-find location.
We’ve enhanced the positioning of our Main Stage this summer to allow for better views and more immersive sounds. Get down there bright and early for our spectacular main stage openers Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Orlando Weeks and House Gospel Choir who will be kick starting the day ready for the arrival of our headliners Underworld, Jungle and Years & Years.
We didn’t think it was possible, but we’ve improved our amphitheatric forest dancefloor… We’ve spent the long winter repairing the drainage in The Valley, so that if it does rain, your dancing feet will remain on solid ground. We’ve also built an extra set of entrance steps to allow quicker access – which means less queuing and more dancing.
We know you expect the unexpected at Wilderness, and so we have planned a spectacular Spectacle that sprawls the entire weekend. Eye-popping chaos, beauty, luminescence and energy will ambush you at every turn. Keep your eyes peeled, and your heart open.
The House of Sublime is your colourful pageant of joy championing self-expression and challenging gender norms. Home to world-class alt-cabaret and performers celebrating queerness in all its intangible glory, it’s the place to dance till you drop, smash the patriarchy and our piñata, and join workshops, club nights, and celebrations to push your buttons and your boundaries. The House’s flagship show Alternative Miss Wilderness is back in all its gregarious and upfront glory, and, this year, the whole space has been beefed up and shaken down. It’s bigger. It’s better. It has its own bar, so now you never need to leave.
The Family Field is bigger and better than ever before. Your little tribe of wild festival monkeys will be entertained and diverted by a menagerie of performers and workshops, including The Flying Seagull Project, Tootles n’ Nibs, Cosmic Crafting, 321 Let’s Have Fun, The Magical Musical Bubble Bike, Mortimer Nannies, Exploring Nature, The Art Cannon, Transmission Roundhouse and Groove School CIO. That should exhaust them.
Our delicious array of Food Traders will return, bringing you an eclectic mix of flavours from across the globe. We have also introduced a new food hub with various stalls close to our Family, Accessibility and Live-In Vehicle campsites.
The multitude of Festival Fashion Traders will also return to those enjoyed before the pesky pandemic, offering the full spectrum of unique pieces for festival fashionistas – whether you desire bespoke couture or off-the-peg treats, high-end class or low brow bling, brand spanking new and sequinned or truly vintage. We have partnered with Crisis to create a Wilderness Second Hand Clothing Store, which will feature Camping Supplies alongside the clothing should you have forgotten anything vital.
Our Makers Quarter features a new art studio with four spaces dedicated to arts and crafts, fashion, pottery and screen-printing, and a packed programme of workshops and classes in those disciplines. Bespoke Wilderness merch will be available.
Over at The Sanctuary, The Shala is your home for sound experiences, energy sessions and musical journeys, welcoming people to the joy of connection through meditation, breathwork, movement and sound. This year the incredible musician and electronic producer Jon Hopkins plays improvised piano over a full album playback of his (as yet unreleased) album Music For Psychedelic Therapy.
We are beyond delighted to ring in the long-awaited return of the decadent Lakeside Spa: the ultimate destination for pampering and indulgence. Booking is – as always – essential.
Around every corner, you’ll find a cast of Walkabout Performers to thrill and titillate. Look out for new characters, wild troupes and old favourites. Interaction encouraged.
Celebrating The Great Outdoors is one of the central parts of the Wilderness experience, and we’ve added more pursuits to the already teaming bill: our Horse-Riding sessions return, ever-popular Archery is back along with Axe Throwing. Brand new workshops for this year include a Phone Photography Masterclass and Stargazing. Pre-booking advised.
The Boutique Campsite is still taking bookings should you want to upgrade to one of our luxury accommodation options.
~ Brand New for ’22 ~
The Stargazer Stage is a brand-new venue representing genres rarely seen at Wilderness: indie, alternative and the leftfield. Take a deep dive into our programme and rock out at the festival’s new indie home. Expect everything from breezy grunge to surf rock, freewheeling freak-pop to acid folk via mischievous and lively rock ‘n’ roll.
The Tower of Tomfoolery is our exciting new stage for The Playing Fields, providing musical accompaniment to the nonsense and games you enjoy at the hands of the green’s rigorous coaches. The Tower is open for your recreation and entertainment. Embrace the ridiculous. Seize the silly. Expect mass participatory weirdness, games, music, pageantry and much more at the newly established counterpoint to The Playing Fields.
New Campsite Locations. We heard you! We have updated many aspects of our campsites. The Accessible Carpark and Campsite have been moved to ensure smother access to the arena. We have restored an old track around the park to provide Caravans and Campervans with a dedicated entrance to a brand-new Live-In Vehicle Field location next to the arena. And we’ve repaired the old bridges which lead to the General Campsite by the lakes to make access easier.
That’s a wrap.
We’ll be seeing you very soon x
