The Wilderness Kitchen

Michael Davies, born in London, spent one year studying biology at Manchester University before leaving to pursue his love for food and hospitality. Mike started working in kitchens with no formal chef training; he embraced a hands-on learning approach, honing his skills on the job.

Driven by steadfast ambition, Mike now co-owns Frank’s Cafe and the award-winning pub and restaurant, The Camberwell Arms. His culinary journey includes experience at The Anchor and Hope in Waterloo and The Canton Arms, as well as stages at Le Manoir, St John Bread & Wine, The Vineyard Restaurant, The Walnut tree in Abergavenny and The Ledbury.

Mike co-launched Frank's Cafe, in Peckham in 2008. In 2023 Time Out named Frank’s Cafe the best rooftop bar in Europe. The subsequent opening of The Camberwell Arms in 2014 solidified his presence in London’s culinary scene. A hub for the local community and destination for those from further afield, The Camberwell Arms has become a much lauded South London institution known for its refined, seasonal comfort food, moreish cocktail list and warm, welcoming hospitality.

This summer will see Mike’s debut cookbook, Cooking for People, where he seamlessly weaves together easy-to-follow recipes with insightful musings on seasonality, ingredients and the meaning of hospitality. The book will celebrate his own love of food and hosting with helpful advice on planning, shopping and timing the perfect feast.

As Chef Director at The Camberwell Arms, Mike continues to impart wisdom, heart and soul, celebrating the establishment's tenth anniversary this year.
